I officially hit 26 years of living with type 1 diabetes on November 1st, and I've been thinking a lot about how differently I see this disease today compared to when I was 15, 20, or even 25 years old. There are things I used to believe so strongly about what it meant to be a "good diabetic," how much responsibility I had for my health, and what diabetes meant about me as a person that I see completely differently now.

In this solo episode, I'm sharing seven beliefs that have fundamentally changed the way I live with T1D. I open up about the years I tied my A1C to my self-worth, how achieving a 5.7 A1C through rigid food and exercise rules actually made my life smaller, and why I spent so many years hiding my diabetes despite appearing confident to everyone around me.

I also reflect on how becoming a mother has changed the way I think about my long-term health, what it means to take ownership of your diabetes, and why making more room for diabetes can actually give you more freedom.

Whether you've lived with T1D for six days, six years, or 26 years, I hope this episode encourages you to reflect on the beliefs you've developed along the way, how they've shaped your life, and whether some of them might be ready to change.

WHAT WE COVER:

  • The one thing my parents did after my diagnosis at age seven that completely changed how I viewed living with T1D
  • Why getting my A1C down to 5.7 came at a cost I didn't recognize until years later
  • How learning to eat pizza, ice cream, and 160–230 grams of carbs a day became part of building a healthier relationship with diabetes
  • Why I hid my T1D diagnosis while playing Division I soccer, and the insecurity I didn't recognize underneath it
  • How becoming a mom and experiencing loss changed the way I think about long-term health and the life I want to be here for
  • What I hope my son learns from watching me live with type 1 diabetes, especially when things get hard
